Data Backup and Organization of Your
Business
Data backup and organization of your business is necessary and in your own interest. While
organization and data backup may seem tedious or mundane, there will be times you will be so grateful that you gave
it your attention. I will start with organization first, and move on to data backup later.
Create a method for organizing your important data
I prefer spreadsheets myself, as they are easier to organize and
to find important elements when I need them. You can just use notepad if it is easier for you. If you don't have
excel, microsoft works also has a spreadsheet. When you create a web
presence (blog or website), create a central folder where you can keep all important data backed up.
Name your folder (Bass Fishing Data, for example) and keep all backup data and necessary information in that
file.
I create a spreadsheet for each domain. I have information at the top about where
I am hosted, and my login information. Also where my domain name is registered, and when it expires. Beneath
that I have headings where I enter any products I am promoting on that site, what affiliate network I am using,
my login and password, the email associated, and how I will receive payment (direct deposit-check-paypal,etc).
I include any information I might later need.
Create a data backup file
Also create a file within this main file and name it
backup. This is where you will keep everything to backup or re-create your website or blog if the need
ever arises. Since I use XsitePro to build websites, I can simply export a small file and store it in this
folder and it has my entire site backed up. If you use another editor, you will need to download via ftp from
your server and backup in this folder. Do this on a regular basis.
Blogs should also be backed up. I have recommended a backup plugin on the previous page, but
you should also have some or all files in a backup on your hard drive. The plugin will backup your posts,
pages, and comments, but you should backup the other files in this folder. I have my theme, my plugins and
other info backed up in this file.
Read this explanation for a clearer understanding of what makes up a blog, and it's
various elements that requre backup.
Data backup externally
You should have another alternate location for data outside your own computer. This
could be to a disc or other external storage, or it could be online. This page will give you several choices
for online data storage that will not requre payment. An outside backup source will give
you extra security in the event your computer crashes.
