Choose reciprocal links with care

Reciprocal links can be a help in getting your new website noticed but care needs to be taken in how you proceed in a reciprocal links program. Don't be so eager to get links that you exchange links with websites that are poor websites, or those that may lose favor with the search engines. Consider that who your website associates with, could also reflect poorly on your website.

Don't exchange links with websites that use black hat tactics. White text on a white background is just one. This allows keyword stuffing and may not immediately be picked up by the search engines, but later down the line it could get them delisted. Sites that have scraped content and pages upon pages of rss feeds are not good reciprocal linking partners either.

Exchange links with websites that provide useful content, and relate in some way to your own website, and that can provide value to your own visitors. Good content, tightly focused, is the best tool you can have in getting your website noticed, getting reciprocal links, and eventually getting one way links.

Reciprocal links checklist:

1. Does this possible link partner provide good content and services, and are they related in some way to your site?
2. Are they a site you are proud to have a reciprocal link from, and will your visitors find them useful?
3. Is there access from their home page to their link directory, and is the link directory on the same domain?
4. Do they offer a good links page system? In other words, are their links categorized? Do they limit the number of links per page? Avoid sites that have one page of miscellaneous links that go on forever.
5. Are the links dofollow? Use firefox and their searchstatus extension. It will highlight the nofollow links. Reciprocal links should be dofollow, or they are of no use.

Reciprocal Link Exchange programs

Joining a reciprocal link exchange will speed up the process. Link Metro has both a free and a paid reciprocal link service. Their free program works very well. It is very efficient. Link Market is another free link exchange service. 

I would use these services sparingly and be very selective of those I approved. When I first wrote this page, reciprocal links were of greater value. Today that value has substantially decreased so I don't recommend using too much of your time on this.

You can also find a link exchange on individual websites that you find appealing. This is a one at a time basis, but you will find websites that are very good and compliment your website, so a link exchange can benefit you.
