Search Engine Placement
Putting certain elements in a page such as H1 and H2 tags are important to
help you with search engine placement. It is important to use your keywords a reasonable number of times. However,
as stated earlier, it is also important to make your copy readable and not overdo it.
The example (walker) was used earlier. Putting the word walker in a keyword tool brought up a
lot of different results. Baby walker, tennessee walker, Walker Texas Ranger, dog walker etc. Many words can have
the same spelling and a variety of meanings. When writing your content you can not only use your core keywords, but
you can also use synonyms.
Related keywords will also help to support the relevancy of your content. Not just synonyms, but
words that are related. If you had a site that featured baby goods and you were writing about a baby walker, you
would be writing your copy around baby safety, babies learning to walk etc. Your copy and the words describing and
relating to a baby walker would support your main word and make it more clear just what your subject is.
On the other hand, if you were writing about tennessee walker the word horse would certainly
appear a few times. There would be talk of horse breeding, thoroughbreds etc. It should be obvious your
subject was not baby walkers.
Using keyword phrases is usually the best approach. A keyword phrase can contain enough
information to make it clear what your topic is. Try just putting the word shower into a search engine and see what
results you get. You will come up with results for bathroom showers as well as results for baby showers. But, if
you put in either fiberglass shower or bathroom shower, it narrows the search and eliminates items related to a
baby shower.
Ever work a crossword and have just one word you could not figure out, so you had to cheat and
look? C'mon now... So you look and then slap yourself in the head because it was so easy! The problem was
you were thinking in the wrong context. It must be much like that for the search engines. They simply want to
provide relevant results for a search, and if your copy does not spell out what your subject is about
then they have a problem.
Search engines do change their criteria for assessing websites, but relevant copy and good
keywords and their placement is basic this year as it was last year. Helping the search engines like your website
is just good common sense.
And, while discussing content, keep it simple. Unless your website is geared to a specific
market of technical professionals, don't use technical jargon. Write much like you would speak in a conversation to
a friend.
Use common sense. Write your content to provide what your visitors are looking for based on
keywords. Good relevant copy is what the search engines use to define search engine placement, make everyone
happy.
One last thing I would like to mention here is, when you are ready to publish your website and
before you submit to the search engines, first read the page about 'off page'
optimization, Website Promotion.
