There are many good reasons for starting a home based business. Each person has his  own set of reasons, but some of the common ones are:

Keeping your employment and starting your home business part-time will also allow you to cover some of the expenses involved in starting a business, or if needed get a loan. Starting on a shoestring can be done if you are diligent, but it will go much faster if you have some money to invest along the way.
