 Website promotion or 'off page optimization' is the task you undertake once your website is uploaded to the internet and has gone live. Website promotion is not a one time thing, it is an ongoing effort you put in to get and keep traffic coming to your website.

Hopefully, you will build more profitable websites and embark on other  business projects once your first home based business is up and running.  Don't put all your eggs in one basket. First of all, don't get caught up in websites that promise to submit your website to a zillion search engines. It's a waste of money. As a matter of fact, most marketers agree that directly submitting to search engines is a waste of time. This applies to Google as well. You can go to Google and see what they have to say about it themselves if you are in doubt.

They will tell you that getting links from other websites and having the search engine follow them to your website is really the best way. Getting links will be covered later in this section.

You can submit to Yahoo, Google and MSN. It won't hurt anything or take a lot of time. Submitting elsewhere is a waste of time and money

Before I forget, don't confuse search engines with directories. Search engines spider your website with robots or spiders, not people. With directories your website will be reviewed by humans.

DMOZ is the major directory and you do want to submit to them manually. Getting into DMOZ will greatly increase the credibility of your site. But don't get too excited. Getting in, if ever, takes time. There are many other directories where you will get listed in much less time.
