Keywords and Search Engines

© Illa Maden  November 2006

Keywords and search engines, is much like saying peanut butter and jelly. Keywords are the words or phrases entered by searchers to find the information or product they are interested in finding. Keywords are the business of the search engines. The search engine's function is to match the searcher up with what they are searching for based on the keywords entered.

Keywords can be either one word, or a phrase entered as a search at a search engine. From the standpoint of a website as the ultimate destination of the searcher, phrases are better because they better define  what a searcher is actually looking for. Keyword phrases make the job of search engines easier as well.  Many words by themselves have more than one meaning, and adding words to a search phrase makes it a more targeted search.

As a webmaster, keywords should be the starting place. Keywords entered at the search engines will show what people are looking for and where there is a demand, whether it is for information, or a physical product.

Once the initial keyword research is done and a product selected, building web pages with both search engines and visitors in mind is the next task.

Keywords gain attention from search engines and bring traffic

Keywords need to be placed throughout your web pages to get the search engines attention. The title tag is probably the most important item on your page. It should contain your main keyword. Headlines are important as well. The placement of keywords throughout your page, in your main page title, and headlines is part of SEO or search engine optimization.

Here you'll find more detailed information about designing web pages for search engine placement.

So far we've covered some basics about keywords and search engines. Once you've created web pages with keywords and some basic guidelines for how to work them into your web pages, the real adventure begins.

Whether you promote your website with just organic search engine traffic in mind, or you do paid advertising in the form of pay per click the work you did on your web pages in regard to keywords will begin to pay off.

The page title, the headlines, and the body copy containing your keywords is what attracts either paid visitors from PPC or organic traffic from the search engines. Good keyword research is essential to getting search engine traffic.
